these are pictures from new orleans.  taken in march.  over 6 months after the levees broke.

after the levees broke. after the levees broke.  after the levees broke.  after the levees broke. after the levees broke.  after the levees broke.  after the levees broke. after the levees broke.  after the levees broke.  after the levees broke. after the levees broke.  after the levees broke. after the levees broke. after the levees broke.  after the levees broke.  after the levees broke. after the levees broke.  after the levees broke.  after the levees broke. after the levees broke.  after the levees broke.  after the levees broke. after the levees broke.  after the levees broke.

after the levees were destroyed.  because i am tired of this one being blamed on katrina.

this was not a natural disaster.  this was a combination cause & effect, and opportunity, and perhaps careful planning.

this is not the aftermath of a hurricane.  this is how the government, the world, and even ourselves remain complicit in the destruction of a people.

these are pictures from new orleans
St. Mary's of the Angels is a school and church. It was the highest point in the neighborhood.  After the levees were destroyed, over 200 people made their way to St. Mary's and were saved.  Since then, it has been home to volunteers for Common Ground who want to help with the devestation.

this messsage was left in one of the classrooms.  it says: september 2, 2005.  we're sorry for the school but the shelter was a blessing.  We had to bring over 200 people here with no help from any coast guard boats. people died and are still in their houses. we had to leave them.  we asked the coast guard for help and got NONE. thanks to __________...they left us here to die.  RIP to the ones we lost.

the showers...6 of 9 showers available to over 400.  cold water only.

the house we gutted and the school were in the 'upper' 9th ward, which was not as damaged as the lower 9th ward.  here are pictures of the area:

a message on the door of a house: to taishana you are so loved, D

before we could get started on the work, we had to be fully protected.  this is a picture of me with all the gear on.

the house that we gutted.  to the right is mike, the owner.

on the street, all that he owned: furniture, clothing, floor, walls, ceiling, etc.

besides having a lower sea level, the lower 9th ward was close to the levees.  when they broke, the force of the water devestated entire communities.  these are some shots of the area.

below is the entrance of Martin Luther King Jr (MLK) Elementary School for Math & Technology, in the lower 9th ward..residents asked us to open the school that the state had taken over, then locked up.  kids who returned had to be driven hours just to go to school, because the state refused to open this school right in the neighborhood.

.this library is huge. by far, the library was the hardest part of the school to clean. The mold made everything  ridiculously heavy, and hard to carry because it was like mush.  It was also really hard to breathe in here, and hard to see with limited light.
